Alaska
|
When they consider a vacation in Alaska, most people think of the classic 7-night cruise roundtrip from Seattle. That certainly is the most popular approach to an Alaska adventure, but Alaska is absolutely awesome, whether you approach it by land, by sea, or by rail.
The friendly agents at Dancing Moon Travel can help you plan the perfect Alaska vacation no matter which approach you prefer. If time or budget are limited, the seven-night Inside Passage cruise is an excellent way to explore the coastal regions of our 49th state. Time & budget permitting, we highly recommend clients expand their trip to a cruise-tour experience. Many cruise lines include options for cruise-land combinations that include visits to the vast reaches of the Alaska interior, including Denali Park, the Yukon, and the unforgettable glass-domed rail trip from Denali to Anchorage. For an optimal experience, we suggest clients plan to tour first and end with the cruise portion of their vacation. For travelers who prefer land-only exploration, there are great options, with both self-drive and rail vacations. Packages through Dancing Moon Travel are comprehensive and customized – our packages include not only your transportation, but also accommodations and activities geared to your interests, activity level and budget. |
Best times to travel: The Alaska cruise season typically runs mid-May through mid-September. While Alaska is a year-round destination for land, the main tourist season primarily mirrors the cruise season. If you are a rather adventurous sort, you might enjoy visiting Alaska in the winter time when you can experience the Northern Lights, participate in the excitement in Anchorage during the start of the Iditarod sled dog race, or photograph the beauty of the stunning Alaskan winterscapes.
Insider tips: If planning a 7-night cruise, or a cruise-land tour combination, look for an itinerary that includes unforgettable Glacier Bay.
For best rates, book your Alaska cruise for early or late season – in May or after mid-August. Pack to dress in layers as temperatures can vary significantly throughout the day. A mid-weight “puffer” jacket is easy to pack and keep you warm – and don’t forget to include a rain poncho, hat & gloves.
Anchorage is a great city to explore and, surprisingly, a terrific destination for foodies to explore. Not only are there great restaurant options with fare ranging from pub-style food to fine dining, but there are also intriguing micro-breweries for beer lovers to explore. Of course, seafood is abundant and delicious as well.
Finally, the “gathering of eagles” that occurs in the Haines area in the fall and winter attracts literally thousands of bald eagles and is a sight to behold … there is great viewing of the spectacle at certain areas of the Haines Highway.
Pat’s Picks: For empty nesters who appreciate a premium cruise experience, Holland America is a great option with their mid-size ships and traditional onboard experience. Also our top choice for awesome cruise-tour itineraries. For families, Norwegian is a strong choice with their array of amenities and onboard activities. For families wanting a somewhat more upscale experience, go with Princess, a premium brand and family-friendly onboard experience.

Hawaii
|
Hawaii is one of the most exotic and diverse destinations on the planet … and since it’s our 50th state, you don’t even need a passport to get there!
With crystal blue waters - stunning green cliffs – awesome volcanoes -- and famous black sand beaches, the natural beauty found in Hawaii is legendary. The array of unforgettable experiences range from active adventures such as hiking and snorkeling, to exploring an active food scene, to cultural explorations of the unique Hawaiian culture found nowhere else on earth. Our Hawaii packages typically include your flights from the mainland, transfers, accommodations, inter-island flights, rental cars and activities selected specifically to suit your unique interests and preferred activity level. |
Best time to travel: Hawaii is a year-round vacation destination. For best rates and lower crowds, consider “shoulder season” April & May or Sepember & October. For whale watching, November – May. For surfers and North Shore wave season December – March.
Insider tips: Most of our first-time Hawaii visitors, we recommend three islands and minimum 10 days. Oahu, Maui and the Big Island are great choices for itinerary.
No car necessary for Oahu/Honolulu … other islands, definitely will want to have a vehicle. Why not splurge on a convertible to enjoy Hawaii’s incredible weather!
While in Hawaii DO NOT MISS doing the Circle Island Tour. You will thank me for insisting!
For a seamless experience exploring four of Hawaii’s top destinations: Consider the weekly NCL cruise on NCL’s Pride of America, departing every Saturday roundtrip Honolulu.
Pat’s Picks: For first-class beachfront accommodations in Honolulu, our clients love the Outrigger Waikiki Beach and the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort.
For best luau experience: We recommend Germaine’s Luau in Honolulu, or the show at Polynesian Cultural Center. For Maui, Drums of the Pacific offers a great luau experience.

Ireland
|
Always one of our Top Five most popular destinations … our clients love our customized Ireland itineraries whether they choose independent travel by self drive or by rail, escorted small group, or splurge with the ultimate experience, exploring Ireland with a private driver.
Our most popular itineraries begin and end in Dublin and include the beautiful scenery of the Wicklow Mountains with stops at Glendalough & Powerscourt -- a visit to the delightful village of Kilkenny – and two nights exploring the charms of Killarney with its picturesque shops, restaurants, and the enchanting scenery of the Ring of Kerry – and then on to the coastal town of Galway where you can take in the stunning vistas from the soaring Cliffs of Moher, visit the ancient Aran Islands where Gaelic is still spoken as their everyday language, and explore the barren landscapes of The Burren. Of course, every traveler is different and each of our itineraries is customized to meet your every requirement to ensure your trip is unique and unforgettable. |
Best Time to Travel: Ireland is a popular destination. For decent weather somewhat outside of peak demand periods, we recommend May and September as great times to visit.
Insider Tips: Be prepared and pack for all kinds of weather, as you may experience sunshine, rain, & wind as pretty much anything can happen just from one hour to the next.
Book ahead. Accommodations and popular activities sell out early on. If you plan to visit Ireland, do not expect to find vacancy at good hotels or popular attractions.
Don’t panic if someone asks you “what’s the crack” – it’s actually local lingo “what’s the craic” and basically means “what’s going on?”
Ireland is a casual sort of place, not necessary to over pack. Jeans take you most anywhere, throw in a pair of khakis and black slacks and a couple is ready to go anywhere.
Ireland is almost a cashless society … your Visa and Mastercards are accepted most everywhere … Amex not quite so much. Ireland uses the Euro; Northern Ireland currency is the British Pound Sterling. Also, tipping is much more modest in Ireland than in the U.S. If ordering drinks at the bar, generally no tip is expected. For table service, 10-15% is appreciated.
Pat’s Picks: Clients love the Davenport hotel in Dublin … it is a beautiful 4-star property in the perfect location for sightseeing. The Green also gets great feedback for accommodations. For Killarney, you cannot beat Killarney Towers for beautiful accommodations right in the middle of everything.

Italy
|
Italy is a perennial favorite with travelers, and rightfully so. With its vibrant culture & history, iconic art & attractions, and legendary food scene, Italy has something to offer travelers across the spectrum of interests and travel styles.
In addition to everything else, travelers are enchanted with the people of Italy. They are known for their passion and expressiveness and generally extend a warm welcome to visitors to their country. First-time visitors to Italy have many options. The Rome metropolis offers must-see attractions such as the amazing attractions at the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, and Forum. The Amalfi Coast enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the single most romantic destinations on the planet – a perfect choice for an unforgettable honeymoon. There is the colorful Island of Sicily – the stunning Lakes Region – the fashion center of Milan. With the myriad options available, most of our first-time visitors to Italy still opt for an itinerary that includes two or three nights in Rome followed by several nights in Florence. Florence not only offers a wide array of art and metropolitan attractions, but is also the perfect base of operations to explore the legendary Tuscan countryside. If time and budget permits, many travelers choose to end their trip with a night or two in Venice. Travel throughout Italy is facilitated by an amazing rail system that is not only reliable and efficient, but also very affordable. Trains run frequently between major cities, and it is incredibly easy to navigate your way around the country. |
Insider tips: While English is a mandatory subject in Italian schools, proficiency varies greatly by location. While you might find you are able to converse in popular tourist areas, such is not generally the case in other parts of the country.
For your stay in Rome, we recommend the area of the Spanish Steps. There are hotels at various price points in this area and it is a solid location for exploring most of the major Rome attractions.
Clients are always happy with their stay at Hotel Berchielli in Florence and love the historical ambiance and location. In Venice, Liasidi Palace is a great choice for a hotel reflecting local character and great location.

Croatia
Finally, we come to my own personal favorite destination on the planet. Croatia is absolutely magical!
Whether you are a history buff, a foodie, luxury lover, or active adventurer, this small country has it all. People are friendly, safety is not a concern, and English is widely spoken everywhere. Croatia provides the complete package.
Dubrovnik, known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, is not to be missed during any exploration of Croatia. The historic Walled Old City is stunning, and Game of Throne fans will recognize several filming locations during their tour. Split is another large city with rich history … Diocletian’s Palace is a must-see attraction during any visit to this historic city. Zagreb and Zadar are two other cities worthy of time on any Croatia exploration.
Adventurers and photographers will be enthralled by the eight national parks with stunning scenery, lakes and waterfalls. Plitvice Park in particular is famous for its 16 inter-connected lakes and numerous waterfalls. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Split and Dubrovnik are accessible via cruise ship and numerous itineraries incorporate a day in one or the other. Land-based touring is easy with lovely accommodations and food options ranging from a casual burger to five-star rated Michelin dining. There are also numerous local wineries definitely worthy of exploration.
All this said, in my opinion, the optimal way to explore the beautiful country of Croatia is via a private yacht tour. Your intimate vessel typically accommodates between 30 and 50 passengers and carries you from one fascinating destination to the next, accessing small ports of call unavailable to larger ships. Your small ship will take you to the larger cities outlined above, but also smaller islands and charming ports like Hvar, Korcula, and Trogir.

Insider Tips: Croatia now uses the Euro as its official currency.
Tipping 10-15% is appreciated and rounding up for cab drivers is a nice gesture. If you elect to “walk the wall” in Dubrovnik, plan on early morning or sunset in order to avoid the heat of the day as there is no shade available up top. Local wines and olive oils are outstanding in Croatia…be sure to try them and plan to bring a few bottles back home! Pat’s Picks: There are some outstanding hotel properties to explore in Croatia. In Dubrovnik, we love the Grand Villa Argentina just up the hill from Old Town. In Hvar, the Palace Elisabeth is exquisite and right in the middle of where you want to be. In Zagreb, the Esplanade was built in the early 1900’s to accommodate passengers on the Orient Express – it is possibly the most exquisite hotel property I’ve ever experienced and the buffet breakfast is unforgettable. |
